Male Breast Reduction

Male Breast Reduction is a surgical correction of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men. It is a procedure which treats Gynecomastia - excess amount of glandular tissue or fatty tissue in the men’s breast area. Gynecomastia affects 40 to 60 percent of all men. It can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs. Male Breast Rediuction procedure flattens and enhances the chest contours.

In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, only liposuction may be performed. This requires insertion of a cannula, a thin hollow tube, through several small incisions. The cannula is moved back and forth in a controlled motion to loosen the excess fat, which is then removed from the body by vacuum suction.

Excision techniques are recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. Excision also is necessary if the areola will be reduced, or the nipple repositioned to a more natural male contour. Incision patterns vary depending on the specific conditions and surgical preference.

Sometimes gynecomastia is treated with both liposuction and excision.

There will be some swelling and bruising of the treated area and to help reduce this you will wear a elastic garment which is worn for 4 weeks, which will go down in the first few weeks. Yet the full effect of the procedure may show after 10 – 12 weeks. Most patients can return to full activity, including exercise, in about a month following surgery.

Recovery is normally between two to three weeks. It is important not to carry out vigorous activities for the first five days after the surgery. You can return to work and to everyday activities after three weeks and begin exercise after six weeks.
